Uttara Kannada District has unique distinction of having different agro climatic zones and soil types, hence thrust is to be given to improve the economic status of the farming community   of the different agro climatic zones in the district.  There are plenty of opportunities for the overall development of horticulture. Plantation and spices are high value horticultural crops, which fetch a lot of foreign exchange. The land available for expansion under horticultural crops is limited and 66 per cent of the farming families fall under small and marginal holder’s category. Hence, production per unit area of land available for cultivation is to be increased. Pepper, Vanilla, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Clove, Cocoa, Nutmeg and Betel vine are to be popularized as intercrops/ mixed crops among farmers cultivating Areca nut and Coconut. Farmers are mainly dependent on Areca nut and Coconut. Hence farmers face financial problems when prices of Areca nut and Coconut crash.
In this back ground for an alternate source of income, cultivation of fruit, intercrops, flower crops, medicinal and aromatic crops are to be encouraged. Cultivation of wide range of tropical and subtropical fruit crops like Sapota, Banana, Pineapple etc., could be taken up. Commercial flower crops like Orchids, Anthuriums, BOP, Heliconias,  Jasmine and medicinal and aromatic crops like Patchouli, Gloriosa, Sandal, Amla, Lavancha and Lemon Grass have vast potential in the near future.
