Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS)
an S & T programme of Government of India has been launched by the Department
of Science and Technology (DST-GOI) with the active support of Government of Karnataka
during march 1992. KSCST is the Nodal agency to implement the project. The overall
objective of the NRDMS is to increase the efficiency of utilization of natural resources
through the application of scientific management principles. At present KSCST has set up
16 district NRDMS centers in the state located at the offices of the Zilla panchayaths
under the administrative control of concerned Chief Executive Officers. The primary
objective of the centre is to support the district administration in planning and managing
the natural resources using Geographic Information System (GIS). In NRDMS, data have been
broadly classified into six sectors namely: Natural resources, demography, Agro economy,
infrastructure and Miscellaneous.
NRDMS centre at Uttara Kannada is one of the district centre
established in the district during April 1994.
The objectives of the district centre is
to prepare district resource profiles at periodic intervals.
to provide analysed information to the Zilla panchayath and other
developmental agencies on the management of natural resources.
to test the software developed at various R & D centers.
to train implementers and decision makers in the concept and use of
natural resources data management system.
to provide feed back on quality of data to data gathering
organizations.
Using GIS and database, applications for infrastructral facilities
planning such as location of hospitals, roads, police stations, polling booths for
elections etc., have been developed to aid the district planners and administrators.
Thematic maps on various themes such as infrastructral facilities,
Soil, Minerals, Driange (3 Tk), Landuse/Landcover, Rainfall, Village maps, GP/ZP/TP/Hobli
maps, Seabird RCs maps, Town maps have been prepared.
