Role Played by the Department: -

            Uttara kannada District has different agro climate conditions due to geographical location with five Talukas in coastal area, four Taluks in ghats and two Taluks in plain with 80% of the land under forest.  The total livestock popultion as per 2007 census provisional figures is Cattle-367172, Buffaloes-118767, Sheep-2702, Goats-12087, Pig-883, Dogs-93410 and Poultry-365573.

            With definite potential for Animal Husbandry activity the department has the responsibility of not lnly treating the sick animals but also protect the animals against contagious diseases.  In this context the department aims at.

    • Health Coverage:- Intensive Vaccination against contagious disease and dosing internal parasites.  Timely vaccination against the contagious diseases will provide Philip to dairy economy.

    • Teating the sick animals.

    • Breeding:- Intensive crossbreding of cattle with high pedigree exotic frozen semen and upgrading local buffaloes with high pedigreefrozen semen in all the institutions.

    • Taking up intensive fodder development with improved nutritive fodder varieties.

    • Implementing Socio-economic programmes for the up liftment of downtrodden.

    • Training through extension activity about modern animal husbandry practices.

    • Livestock census.

    • Integrated sample survey.

    • Poultry development.

    Schemes Executed by the Department:

      • Special Component Plan:- For Upliftment of economical & socially weaker section with a subsidy limit of Rs. 12000/- per beneficiaries.
      • Infertile/Sterile health camp of Livestock:- To bring infertile animal under reproduction and increase milk production.
      • Supplys of Giriraja Birds:- To improve genetic potential of domestic poultry birds.
      • Assistance to farmers:- Fodder seeds are supplied to farmers.
